SINGING THEIR HEARTS OUT
TO COMMEMORATE Malaysia’s 55th National Day, the MUI Group presented a musical entitled Harmony by the Philharmonic Society of Selangor recently at the Civic Centre in Petaling Jaya.
Through the MUI group’s sponsorship, it was a free concert for their staff and family members as well as residents and volunteers from more than 20 organisations. The choir consists of more than 100 singers aged between eight and 85.
Entertaining: The choir members accentuating their performances with
hand gestures led by Teh (in black).
They performed patriotic songs Tanah Pusaka, Putra Putri and Getaran Jiwa.
According to The Philharmonic Society of Selangor chairman and choir director Cheryl Teh, the songs were well-received when they performed it in Australia.
The choir also sang Embrace the Music, What a Wonderful World, Edelweiss, That’s Amore as well as a Sound of Music and Greasemedley.
The second half of the performance started off with solo performances. Wong Hui Lee sang Reflections from the animation Mulan while Kamaluddin Kasim rocked the stage with Elvis Presley’s Wooden Heartand Let Me Be Your Teddy Bear.
Peter Wong was entertaining with his rendition of I’m A Believer from the animation Shrek and Edmund Goh performed Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.

Introduction
Hand gesture is the most popular in Malaysia that without many people noticed. Actually, almost every day Malaysia citizen used this sign in their life. In other hand, people called it as a Sign Language.
When visiting Malaysia, the visitor should understand the local customs and practices.
Although handshakes generally suffice for both men and women, some conservative Muslim ladies may acknowledge an introduction with a gentleman with a nod of her head and smile. A handshake is only to be reciprocated if the lady offers her hand first. The traditional Malay greeting of "salam" resembles a handshake with both hands but without the grasp. The man offers both hands, lightly touches his friend's outstretched hands, and then brings his hands to his chest to mean, " I greet you from my heart". The visitor should reciprocate the "salam". “Salam” is not practiced by the rest of the community though, so a normal handshake will do.
